What is a Registered Dietitian?
add
A Registered Dietitian (RD or PDt) is a regulated health professional who is passionate about the potential of food to enhance lives and improve health. Dietitians translate the science of nutrition into terms you can understand, without fads or gimmicks. They collaborate with you to embrace food, to understand it, and to enjoy it.

Dietitians, just like engineers and doctors, are accountable to provincial regulatory bodies for the highest standards of education and ethics. To use the title Registered Dietitian (RD), dietitians must be registered with the dietetic regulatory body in the province in which they practice.  Dietitians undergo comprehensive and rigorous training, both on the job and in university. Dietitians are held accountable to the highest standards of education and ethics, which means we look beyond fads and gimmicks to deliver reliable, life-changing advice.

What is the difference between a Registered Dietitian and a Nutritionist, Wholistic Nutritionist, or Nutrition Coach?
add

A Registered Dietitian (RD or PDt) is a regulated health professional just like physiotherapists, doctors, and nurses. In order to be registered with the College of Dietitians of Ontario, Joline had to:

  • Earn an accredited Bachelor of Science in Food and Nutrition
  • Complete a one-year internship
  • Pass the Canadian Dietetic Registration Exam (CDRE)
  • Pass the College of Dietitian Jurisprudence Exam every 5 years
  • And must hold professional liability insurance

However, many nutritionist titles (including nutritionist, wholistic nutritionist, and nutrition coach) are not regulated titles in Canada. While some nutritionists may have some nutrition education, there is no legislated minimum level or length of education, minimum standards of care, or public protection requirements to use the title 'nutritionist'. It is important that individuals accessing services from a nutritionist, wholistic Nutritionist, or Nutrition Coach inquire about the education of their chosen nutritionist.

Are your services covered by my employers health insurance plan?
add

Services offered by Registered Dietitians (RD) may be covered by your employer's extended health benefits plan. However, the allied health professionals covered within an individual policy varies from employer to employer.

It is recommended that you reach out to your benefits provider to see if Registered Dietitians are covered under 1) your allied health coverage, or 2) through your healthcare spending account.

All information required to submit a health claim to your insurance benefits provider will be provided on your receipt. We do not direct bill insurance at this time.

We can confirm that the following employers have RD coverage as part of their benefits plans:

  • Solvest Inc.
  • Kobayashi & Zedda Architects Ltd.
  • Kwanlin Dun First Nation Government

Since most health benefits providers have the option for Dietitian coverage, we also have resources to help you advocate to have Dietitian services added to your plan.

Please reach out for more information.
